Forged on the hard-pack sand, built for the impact zone:
A tactical blueprint bridging Elite surf rescue traditions with modern medicine
The Core Legacy
The foundation of Advanced Ocean Rescue was built on the beaches of Southern New Jersey.
For decades, the Wildwood Crest Beach Patrol (WCBP) has been defined by a rare kind of alchemy—a culture where the operational standard for physical and rescue excellence is exceptionally high, but the depth of familial loyalty is even higher.
It is an elite environment where new rookies are systematically molded into disciplined, cohesive crews who understand and respect the raw power of the Atlantic. This manual is deeply rooted in that rich heritage of stewardship, vigilance, and elite performance on the sand.
The Mission Beyond Active Duty
While an ocean lifesaver's active tenure on the stand may eventually transition into the rearview mirror, the true weight of the phrase “once a guard, always a guard” is measured by an enduring passion for the surf zone.
This project is the direct result of a lifelong connection to that community. Even decades after hanging up the active uniform, the leadership team at the WCBP—including Chief Bud Johnson and Lieutenants Maxi Bilkins and Bic Murphy—kept the beach tent door wide open.
By keeping the author integrated with the evolution of modern lifeguard training and rookie development milestones, they provided the ultimate inspiration for this manual: a desire to give back to the family that continues to forge the future advanced ocean rescuers of the coastline.
The Evolution of Care
The landscape of open-water safety and shoreline first aid has evolved dramatically over the few decades. Today’s rescue environment demands that lifeguards move past basic pool-guarding concepts and adopt a sophisticated, clinical approach to trauma and environmental emergencies.
The Advanced Ocean Rescue Manual was developed to bridge that exact gap. It synthesizes the gold-standard research of global public safety authorities into highly structured, muscle-memory protocols designed specifically for high-impact coastal environments.
It is a tribute to the standard of excellence passed down by mentors on the sand, engineered to ensure the next generation of professional guards has the definitive tactical tools to protect their shorelines.
